Description
General cargo vessels (or Multi-purpose vessels) are the most common. Their versatility makes it possible to carry a variety of cargo at the same time like bulk cargo, dangerous cargo, refrigerated cargo, and containers. The size of the general cargo vessels is between 5,000 and 25,000-ton deadweight (DWT). Modern general cargo vessels have two decks and they are called "twindeckers". General cargo vessels have the capacity to carry about 30-40 tons SWL.
Description These types of vessels mainly carry bulk cargoes (coal, iron ore, grain, minerals, etc.) They are not able to load containers as bulk carriers are single-deckers. There are several different types of bulk carriers and the main distinction between the two is the size. A two-word phrase is commonly used to determine vessels by size. The first word means it belongs to a geographic object and the second term determines the size.
Description
Containerships carry all of their load in containers. The sizes vary from small vessels with a capacity of about 500 TEU to large vessels with a capacity of about 22,000 TEU. Their holds are cellular, with vertical frames or guides where the containers are slotted. Containerships can load both 20-foot and 40-foot containers. There are 3 types of containerships: Container feeder ship (capacity to carry 300 TEU to 1000 TEU), Large container ship (capacity to carry 10,000 TEU to 20,000 TEU), Open-top container ship, or Hatchless containerships (capacity to carry 2,000 TEU to 4,000 TEU).
